I am looking to build a new VoIP service that requires me to allocate
one phone number to each user, similarly to how many companies in the
"unified inbox" space do today (e.g. ureach.com, efax.com,
ringcentral.com). In order to allocate one phone number for each
customer, I obviously need to acquire phone lines, "provision" them in
some fashion, and connect them to my VoIP system, so that any caller
in the PSTN can reach that number. I have learned that I can "rent"
pre-provisioned phone lines from VoIP providers such as VoicePulse.com
(who call themselves "DID providers"), who not only acquire the lines
directly from the source, but also take care of connecting those lines
to a SIP or IAX device on my end (such as an Asterisx VoIP PBX).

What I would like to know is how to bypass a DID provider, and in
essence become a DID provider myself, so I don't have to pay somebody
like VoicePulse for this provisioning service.

My questions are:

1) Who do I go to in order to "purchase" or "rent" phone numbers
directly from the source (whoever the source is)?

2) What does the process of provisioning these phone lines (i.e.
connect them to the PSTN and effectively become a DID provider) entail
in terms of infrastructure?
